Mud cat and shovelhead are just a few of the nicknames for the flathead catfish. Flatheads are famous for their flattened head and big lower lip or jaw. These catfish have a rounded tail unlike their cousin the blue cat who has forked tail. Flatheads are yellowish brown in color. They have white or yellowish colored belly. Flatheads are another large species of catfish. These fish can grow upwards of 80lbs.

The blue catfish is famous for the hump in its back right in front of the dorsal fin thus the nicknames humpback and chucklehead. These catfish have a forked tail, and their bodies are grayish to bluish gray in color. Blue cats are one of the largest freshwater species of catfish. They can grow upwards of 100lbs.

The channel cat is one of the most popular species of catfish. The channel cat is also know as the spotted cat, the squealer and the speckled cat. Channel cats have a forked tail like their cousin the blue cat. Channel cats are brownish gray in color with dark spots running down its sides. These catfish can grow upwards of 40 to 50lbs.
